Dr. Gillen earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine after completing undergraduate studies in biology at the State University of New York at Buffalo, with additional education at SUNY Stony Brook. He completed his internal medicine internship and emergency medicine residency at Geisinger Medical Center, where he later served as Chief Resident. He went on to distinguish himself as a leader in medical education, serving as Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director at Geisinger Medical Center for 12 years.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Gillen has held numerous academic and hospital appointments across the United States, including positions at Geisinger Medical Center, Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, and Tampa General Hospital.

Dr. Gillen and his wife, Marlene Gillen, APRN, a cardiology nurse practitioner, have a combined 45 years of service at Tampa General Hospital. They are both devoted dog lovers and share their home with their pups, Jack and Rosie.

Dr. Gillen has four children:

  • Jake Gillen, an acute care surgeon, and his wife, Natalie, a urogynecologist, both practice at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia, where they live with their children, Isla and Harrison.
  • Lindsey Kovach, the eldest daughter, is a realtor in Greenville, South Carolina, where she lives with her husband Kyle, a teacher, and their children Gwen, Livi, and Cam.
  • Whitney OBrian, the youngest daughter, is a board-certified optometrist practicing in Greenville, South Carolina, where she lives with her husband, Brandon, an instrument-rated pilot.
  • Kirk Gillen is an interventional radiologist at the VA Medical Center in Charleston, South Carolina. His wife, Megan, is a registered nurse at MUSC Medical Center. They reside on James Island.
